Joan Viljoen studied graphic design at the University of Stellenbosch, where she received her BA (FA) degree in 2002. She began her career working at one of Cape Town’s prestigious Advertising & Design Agencies, King James RSVP, as designer and art director on a wide variety of projects - including brand identities, fashion promotional campaigns, illustrations and high-end corporate material. She then went on to work as designer for MullenLowe South Africa, before being appointed Creative Director at Shofar. During this time she worked on various interior design projects, orchestrated large-scale identity development for non-profit organisations and advertising for public events, and developed educational and interactive media.
Today Joan is working independently as well as collaboratively on various projects ranging from 2D (print design) to 3D (commercial & private interiors). Her years of experience in the graphic design industry and her expansion into interior design has established Joan’s expertise and strengthened her passion to help her clients build a brand from the development phase to the brand’s translation to interior space.
Over her 16 years of experience, clients have included Elle Decor, Levi Strauss, Allan Gray, Johnny Walker, Nike, Somerset-Mall, Found Collection and various residential clients.
Joan has earned a variety of local and international awards and appeared in a number of publications including Elle Decor (UK, Japan & SA), House & Leisure, Home Beautiful (Australia), Creative Review, (UK), the D&AD (UK) and One Show Design Annuals (USA).
